Electric automaker Tesla is recalling 125,227 vehicles to fix a problem with the seat belt warning chime and reminder light, according to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall covers certain 2012-2024 Model S, 2015-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles to fix a condition where the seat belt warning light and audible chime may not activate as intended if a passenger is not wearing their seat belt. As a result, the affected vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 for “Occupant Crash Protection.”
As with previous Tesla recalls, the company will release an over-the-air software update for the vehicles. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 27, 2024.
The seat belt warning recall is Tesla’s fifth this year and follows a recall of 3,878 Cybertrucks last month to address a condition where the accelerator pedal cover could become dislodged and get trapped by the interior trim. It could cause unintended acceleration of the affected trucks, increasing the risk of a crash.
In January, Tesla recalled nearly 2.2 million vehicles, which was the largest recall in company history. It was also related to driver warning lights. The recalled vehicles had an incorrect font size displayed on the instrument panel for the brake, park and anti-lock brake system warning lights, which Tesla was also able to address via an over-the-air software update.
