The law firm of Brady Reilly & Cardoso, LLC recently released a study tracking all recalls of Tesla automobiles over the years. As of the study’s publication date, Tesla’s vehicles have been involved in eighty-three separate recall orders.
Tesla’s first automobile recall was issued for the Tesla Roadster in 2009, due to an issue with under-torqued rear hub flange bolts. However, the majority of Tesla vehicles affected by recalls go by more familiar names, such as the Model S, Model X, Model Y, and the infamous Cybertruck.
To date, the Tesla vehicle with the most recalls is the Model S, which has been involved in thirty-nine separate recall orders. The Model S just narrowly edged out the Model X for the dubious title of “Tesla’s most recalled vehicle,” as the Model X has been recalled thirty-eight separate times.
Tesla’s Largest Recalls
At the time of the study’s publication, Tesla has had four individual recalls that affected at least 1,000,000 vehicles. The manufacturer’s largest recall to date, 24V051000, affected an estimated 2,193,869 Tesla vehicles of various models and specifications. Affected vehicles had a font size that was too small to easily read displayed for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights.
Luckily for Tesla owners, this problem was quickly and easily addressed via an over-the-air (OTA) software update, allowing drivers to correct the problem conveniently from the comfort of their own driveway.
The Convenience of OTA Recalls
Just over one-third (37.3%) of Tesla’s recall orders have been addressed by OTA software updates. While all recalls are issued to correct important vehicle safety flaws, owners rejoice when they can skip a trip to their local dealership and address the issue via a painless software patch. Of course, any recall requiring the physical removal, repair, or replacement of vehicle components requires owners to schedule a service appointment at their local dealership.
Cybertruck Recalls
The embattled Tesla Cybertruck has made the news repeatedly since it first reached consumers in November of 2023. The Cybertruck’s supporters applaud the vehicle’s unconventional design, good handling, and swift acceleration. However, critics allege that the Cybertruck suffers from design flaws, poor-quality manufacturing, and serious safety problems that put both the vehicle’s occupants and other motorists at risk.
In March of 2025, the Cybertruck was recalled for the eighth time since it was made available to buyers. A pair of exterior trim panels known as “cant rails” could fall off the vehicle unexpectedly due to improper use of adhesive.
Tesla’s fix to the most recent Cybertruck recall has raised eyebrows, with some owners expressing dissatisfaction over the quality of repairs completed. Owners have alleged that the treatment caused visible burn marks to their vehicle or that the cant rails no longer fit seamlessly the way they were intended to. Especially given the vehicle’s hefty price point, owners expected higher-quality repairs that would restore their Cybertruck to full functionality while maintaining its aesthetics.
